A bit about me
My name is Isabella Kung. I’m an author, illustrator, instructor, and cat lover. I’m originally from Hong Kong and now I live in San Francisco, CA. I’ve been illustrating professionally since 2010 and dabbled in all kinds of creative endeavors from illustrating educational books and magazines; to album covers and designing emojis; to gallery shows and making merchandise to sell at craft fairs… but none captured my attention and heart more than creating Children’s Books!
I caught the writing bug in 2015, and through a long and winding journey, my debut author/illustrator picture book NO FUZZBALL! (Orchard Books, Scholastic) came out in 2020 and its sequel, NO SNOWBALL! made it to the shelves in Nov 2022! If my feline obsession wasn’t clear enough, I also illustrated over 120 cats for the board books 123 CATS and ABC CATS (Candlewick). I will gladly take the title of the Cat Lady of Children’s Books. Now, who do I talk to about this? (In all honesty, I love all animals, except for mosquitos that bite humans – aka me, they can all go extinct!)
As our world burns, social media platforms implode on themselves and our lives become increasingly isolated, I’ve decided to give Substack a go! Maybe this will create more fulfilling interactions and connections, and maybe this will make sharing fun again! I’m not entirely sure how this will go, but like all experiments, you just have to jump in! So thanks for reading and hanging out near the deep end with me!
Stay up-to-date
Continuing the deep end of the pool metaphor, subscribe to see if I sink or swim! Either way, I hope it will be entertaining, enlightening, and maybe even inspiring. I plan to share:
Whatever I’m working on
Diving deep into the illustration process, tips, and tricks
The craft of creating books
Treading waters with my writing process
My fav. books, shows, movies, or snacks
Splashes of sketchbook doodles
Amusing tidbits about life and stuff
Cats
And occasionally, new life hacks or motivation habits that I’ll announce here in hopes that it will hold me accountable.
